PH Reports First Case of Arcturus Variant of COVID-19

The Philippines has reported its first case of Omicron subvariant XBB.1.16, also known as Arcturus. According to the Department of Health (DOH), the patient has already recovered and was asymptomatic. The patient was from the province of Iloilo.

Arcturus is a descendant lineage of XBB, which is a recombinant of two BA.2 descendant lineages. It has been reported to be more transmissible and has the ability to evade immunity, and was designated as a variant of interest by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The DOH stated that, as of April 17, 2023, there have been no changes in severity reported in countries where XBB.1.16 was found to be circulating, according to the WHO’s risk assessment. While there may have been slight increases in bed occupancy in India and Indonesia, levels are still much lower compared to the effects of the previous variants. The overall risk assessment is low.

The DOH encouraged the public to continue practicing health protocols such as social distancing and wearing of face masks. Additionally, the DOH urged the public to get vaccinated against the virus to increase their level of protection. As of April 25, the country has a total of 4,255 active Covid-19 cases out of a total of 4,089,709 cases.

Over the last 14 days, the National Capital Region had the most number of new infections at 2,079, followed by Calabarzon with 884, Davao Region with 439, Western Visayas with 307, and Central Luzon with 293. At least 79 million individuals have received two doses of Covid-19 vaccines, while 24 million have received booster shots.

With the country’s first case of the Arcturus variant, health experts have warned the public to remain cautious and vigilant in their adherence to health protocols. They urge the public to get vaccinated, as the vaccines currently available have been shown to provide protection against severe illness and hospitalization, even against new variants such as Arcturus.

Meanwhile, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to take necessary actions to contain the spread of the virus. The government has implemented various measures, such as quarantine protocols and travel restrictions, to prevent the entry and spread of new variants in the country.

The emergence of new variants of the virus highlights the need for continued research and development of vaccines and treatments. Scientists and health experts around the world are working tirelessly to develop effective vaccines and therapies against new variants. The rapid development and deployment of vaccines against COVID-19 have been a significant achievement, but more work needs to be done to address emerging variants.

In the Philippines, the government has been ramping up its vaccination efforts to reach more people and increase vaccine coverage. The government has launched various campaigns and initiatives to encourage more people to get vaccinated, including offering incentives and implementing mobile vaccination clinics to reach more remote areas.

While the country has made significant progress in its vaccination efforts, challenges remain, such as vaccine hesitancy and supply shortages. The government is working to address these challenges and ensure that vaccines are available to everyone who needs them.
