President Rodrigo Duterte is aware that as early as the campaign period, some critics are already comparing him to the bloodthirsty dictator Idi Amin, the notorious “Butcher of Uganda”, but he doesn’t mind.
In a speech during a reunion of San Beda alumni in Malacanang last 17 July 2016, Duterte said: “Wala akong pakialam. Ang paradigm ko hindi dito sa Maynila. Sa Mindanao. Patayan kaagad. O ‘yung mga nalaman ko. Bakit ko papalitan? It is serving the country.”
“Well, I know that I will retire with the reputation of Idi Amin from Uganda. Pero itong akin, kriminal.(Bakit ako) papatay ng inosenteng tao?” said Duterte.
Duterte reiterated that he would stake his honor, life and the president to show how serious he was in shutting down the drug network in the country.
“Talagang seryoso ako dito,” said Duterte.
“Tingnan mo. Sabi nila na pinapatay ang mga tao (sa Davao). Well, o tingnan mo, tingnan mo kung gaano kalinis ang Davao,” said Duterte.
