In Tuguegarao City, a 53-year-old farmer named Vicente “Dodong” Lugaygay by developing his fish farm, he won Php 300,000 in prizes in the national and regional levels. He was awarded as the  2018 Gawad Saka Winner on Fish Culture Category.

His Story

With humble beginnings, Lugaygay set-up his own fisheries in Isabela which is now already successful in a short period of time.

What he learned from his former company for a fledgling tilapia hatchery business, he began his own fish farm. Thereafter, with his good business sense and astute financial management, he was able to attain a high quality source of fish.

As cited in the report of AgrinationPH, Lugagay’s JAVE Farm in Barangay Rizal, Santiago City, supplies fingerlings not only in Isabela but also in other provinces, such as Nueva Vizcaya, Cagayan, Pampanga and the Cordillera Administrative Region. He does this through innovative, cost- and time-efficient and environment-friendly technologies.

Green Water Technology

Behind his success, he was able to develop his fish production through green water technology. According to the report, the technology entails pond fertilization using chicken manure to produce natural food (planktons and moina). Thus, the technology minimize cost yet optimizes production.

The reported also stated that “compared to commercial feeds, the use of natural food is more appropriate during breeding stage. It prevents breeders from expelling their eggs during mouth brooding. Also, he uses alternative fish feeds such as duckweeds, azolla and dried soft-shelled shrimp (for high protein diet). Homemade probiotics are also utilized to bring vigor to his breeders and prevent mortality during summer.”

Aside from developing fish farm, Lugaygay  has his own marketing strategy. He knows when to increase production in order to meet the demand. Respectively, he knows to diversify in other markets, when the demand is low.

“He gives generous commission to agents who can close a deal. Incentives aside, performance of his fingerlings most often serves as their advertisement, which is why a lot of his buyers are repeat customers,”report stated.

“Lugagay, as reputable source of fingerlings, sees to it that every sale comes with technical advice for the whole duration of the culture period, to ensure success of his buyers.”
