Duterte Signed Mandatory Philhealth Law for PWD

President Duterte had signed a law which provides mandatory coverage of Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

As cited in the report from Philstar, the law stated that all PWDs shall be automatically covered under the National Health Insurance Program of state-run Philippine Health Insurance Corp or PhilHealth. 

Moreover, the measures of the law will enact premium contributions for the PWDs which will be given by the national government. However, PWDs which were given benefits by their employers are exempted.

Also, measures requires the government to automatically enroll all persons with disabilities (PWDs) into the National Health Insurance Program.

Significantly, the government will source funds from the collected sin tax law.

Based on the report, the said law was signed last February 22. This law is also an amendment to R.A. No. 7277 or the “Magna Carta for Persons with Disability.”

Notably, “PhilHealth, in consultation with the Health department, Social Welfare department, Labor department, National Council on Disability Affairs and local government units are expected to promulgate implementing rules and regulations within three months upon the effectivity of the law”, report stated.

As cited in the report of Business World, “the new law takes effect after 15 days from its publication in the Official Gazette or in a newspaper of general circulation”.
