Department of Agriculture reported that Russian company orders two metric tons of Philippine mangoes a week from Guimaras.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol stated to Business World that “Exim Pacific, Russian company, has initially placed an order of 2 metric tons of Guimaras mangoes every week as soon as the farmers are able to export”.
Moreover, the agriculture secretary viewed this as an opportunity for Philippine mangoes to enter European market. Mangoes will be expected to be exported in Russia as early as April.
Based on the report, mangoes will be shipped via Bangkok before reaching Russia.
In terms of the mango industry, Philippine Statistics Authority identified that ” mango output in the fourth quarter of 2018 rose 0.5% year on year to 27,620 metric tons (MT). Zamboanga Peninsula accounted for 26% of total output, while Caraga and Northern Mindanao accounted for 24.1% and 15.4%, respectively”.
Specifically, Carabao mango, is the top variety that is being cultivated, and accounted with 81.7% of the total mango production.
Further, the demand of Philippine mangoes in foreign markets is increasing in the past two years. This had influenced to the development of the mango industries of Guimaras, main producer of Philippine mangoes, and other key growing areas like Zambales, Pangasinan, Cebu, Iloilo, the Davao Region, the Zamboanga Peninsula, and Cotabato.
