The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) organized a fruit festival in Baguio City last weekend. The said event generated PhP1.1M through selling fruits from Mindanao.
“I am amazed by the interest shown by the people of Baguio. In fact, nahiya nga ako eh dahil mukhang hindi lahat makakatikim. Na-underestimate namin ‘yung acceptance ng mga tao sa programa. But I would like to apologize and I would like to assure the constituents of Baguio that this will be a continuing program. Mas marami pong prutas ang dadalhin namin dito,” said MinDA Secretary Manny Pinol said on the Cordillera News Agency report.
He also mentioned that the assorted fruits were wiped-out in just three hours.
The durian, rambutan, mangosteen, lansones, and pomelo from Davao and SOCCSKSARGEN were sold during MinDA’s fruit festival. There are 22 tons of assorted fruits that travelled from Mindanao to Baguio City.
Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong stated in the report that the said event shall be conducted every weekend. However, they need two weeks to fix the system and talk with their trading partners.
Outlook of the Fruit Festival
Moreover, Piñol said in his Facebook post that fruit festival will also be organized in other cities such as Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Bicol and Cagayan Valley.
He emphasized that undertaking such activity in different cities entails mass production of fruits from Mindanao.
Apart from that, to assess the financing, logistical and infrastructure requirements of Mindanao fruit growers, is one of MinDA’s intentions to develop the industry.
Respectively, MinDA will hold an island-wide fruit growers meeting on August 28, 2019 among Durian, Mangosteen, Pomelo, Lanzones, Mango, Marang, Rambutan, Pineapple, Lacatan Banana, Passion Fruit, Sweet-Water or Aromatic Coconut and Guyabano producers.
