The City Agriculturist of Zamboanga planned to establish an urban gardening program in 2020 to promote organic produce among the households.
“The agriculturist office would distribute seedlings for free and provide technical assistance to the identified beneficiaries to ensure the successful implementation of the project,” City Agriculturist Carmencita Sanchez said.
Moreover, there will be one hundred households in 30 baranggays which will be chosen to start the urban gardening program.
“We are going to provide free seedlings and technical assistance to the beneficiaries under the program. Even if they have limited spaces at home they can use old plastic pails and other containers to make hanging gardens,” she explained.
Sanchez emphasized that the residents should produce organically-grown vegetables to maintain a healthy lifesyle.
Respectively, she encourages households to start gardening in their own spaces at home.
“Plants and vegetables produced in farms are laced with chemicals and other preservatives that can cause cancer,” she said.
Through home gardening, residents can save significant amount of money because they can already make food that are freshly pick from their respective gardens.
