Julian Martir, the youngest of four children born to a tricycle driver father and a vendor mother, has defied the odds and secured a life-changing opportunity. At just 20 years old, Julian has received acceptance letters from an impressive array of 30 schools in the United Kingdom and the United States. These schools have also awarded him merit scholarships totaling an astounding $1.9 million (around P106 million). Now faced with an enviable dilemma, Julian must decide which path will offer him the chance for a better life and the ability to uplift his family.
Among the prestigious international institutions that have extended offers to the young Bacolod resident are Ohio Wesleyan University, Clarkson University, Hofstra University, Marquette University, Alfred University, Xavier University, and many others. This abundance of options presents Julian with a unique opportunity to carefully consider his personal circumstances before making a final decision.
While he ponders his choices, Julian remains open to the idea of attending universities in Australia, such as the University of Sydney and the University of Queensland. Additionally, he finds himself waitlisted at Connecticut College, which also holds a place of interest. Julian takes into account various factors when making these decisions, including the location where his uncle resides, the programs offered, the cost of attendance, campus safety, and the availability of extracurricular activities.
Achieving such an extraordinary feat required Julian, an alumnus of Negros Occidental High School, to take a gap year to prepare for his college applications. Although taking a gap year after graduating from senior high school is often frowned upon and subject to unfair stereotypes, Julian saw the immense value in this decision. He was determined to address misconceptions and biases associated with taking a gap year, acknowledging that it was initially nerve-racking to diverge from the conventional path. However, he remained resolute, knowing that it was the right choice for him.
Julian’s journey took an unexpected turn when he stumbled upon a group of aspiring international students on YouTube who were eager to maximize the generous scholarships offered by prestigious universities. Although bewildered by the complex undergraduate admission processes abroad, Julian tenaciously pursued his mission. He wrote over 100 essays, studied interview techniques to make a lasting impression on alumni interviewers, compiled necessary documents, and fulfilled various responsibilities to support his applications.
Thankfully, Julian found guidance and support along the way. He connected with a college admissions expert through a WhatsApp group, allowing him to find answers to his burning questions. Overcoming his fear of rejection, Julian shifted his focus to the realm of possibilities, reminding himself that attending college was more important than fixating on pessimism.
Looking back on his experience, Julian now offers practical advice to prospective students. He recommends starting applications in early August, thoroughly researching colleges and their programs, understanding the application requirements, preparing for financial aid applications, and maintaining communication with admissions counselors.
Eager to embark on his college journey, Julian eagerly awaits the opportunity to contribute to his community by bridging the gap between science and technology. He is particularly excited about studying computer science and mathematics. Julian firmly believes that education is everyone’s responsibility and emphasizes the importance of utilizing personal interests to achieve personal growth and success.
