Growth of Agriculture Sector Up to 2.87 in Q3 of 2019 Amid ASF

The growth of agriculture sector increased to 2.87 percent in the third quarter of 2019.

Based on the report of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the said growth of the agriculture sector in the Philippines outdo the 0.87% of last year’s Q3 growth.

“The growth of the agricultural sector is attributed to increasing records for crops, livestock, poultry and fisheries,” Claire Dennis Mapa, Undersecretary of PSA, said.

Apart from the said attributes, crop production, which accounted for 45.19 percent of the total agricultural output, went up by 2.01 percent.

Respectively, corn production increased by 23.47 percent, while that of Palay declined by 4.53 percent.

Western Visayas and SOCCSKSARGEN have decreased produce due to its in insufficient water supply.

PSA mentioned that areas such as CALABARZON, MIMAROPA Region, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula and Caraga declined harvests due to similar problem in water supply

Amid the ongoing outbreak of AFS, livestock production grew by 1.63 percent and contributed 18.67 percent of the total growth of agriculture sector.

Interestingly, Mapa emphasized that hogs and dairy exhibited positive increments of 1.96 and 6.48, respectively.

Poultry industry, on the other, obtained 8.41 percent increment in the third quarter. All the commodities under this industry garnered positive growth.

“Fisheries production also grew by 0.56 percent, sharing 16.70 percent in the total agricultural output. Milkfish, skipjack and seaweed posted increases in production,” the Philippine News Agency reported.

Further, Secretary Willliam Dar emphasized that the Department of Agriculture (DA) will continue to improve its program especially in increasing the supply of agri commodities.

“The growth of the agricultural output has a much better performance. We will continue to enhance the proper and sustained implementation of programs and projects of DA to further elevate the growth of the agriculture sector,” Agriculture Secretary William Dar said.
