The incoming city mayor of Ilo-ilo city plans to establish tree park and tree planting activity in the city.
As cited in the report of Philippine News Agency(PNA), the incoming mayor, Jerry P. Treñas eyes tree park as one of his assignments.
Head of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), Noel Hechanova, said to the the interview with the PNA that the city of Ilo-ilo does not obtain any forest but only mangroves.
On July 6, Ilo-ilo city will have the citywide tree planting in making the tree park of the city. This activity will start at 6 a.m.
Moreover, Hechanova also mentioned that establishing the tree park in Ilo-ilo city can also be included in school curriculum like Science and Biology.
Hechanova impart that “if we have a place where we can plant trees, then the place could create its own ecology. Then the public has a place to visit and they would understand what a forest is.”
Hechanova identified Barangay San Rafael in Mandurriao district or Barangay Hinactacan in La Paz district as potential sites for the tree park. CENRO is looking for an area where urban forest can be placed.
“Donors must be willing to do away with the property for at least 25 years or even permanently”, he said.
More than 2,000 fruit-bearing trees and mangroves are opt to be planted. Respectively, the citywide tree planting also includes the reforestation of mangroves in Hinactacan.
Based on the report, the seeds that will be used will come from the City Agriculture nursery, Department of Environment and Natural Resources. and the Department of Agriculture.
