On May 3, 2021, the Department of Science and Technology initiated their clinical trials to use Euphorbia hirta or tawa-tawa, Chinese chaste tree or lagundi, and virgin coconut oil or VCO as a supplement or therapeutic option for coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The result from the completion of the clinical trials will be out coming this June.

Lagundi and Tawa-tawa

(These clinical trials on lagundi, tawa-tawa and VCO, hopefully, they will be completed soon, and our target is by end of June, but there are many studies that are also starting and other indications are being looked at so it can overlap),”

Dr. Jaime C. Montoya, DOST-PCHRD Executive Director, shared through the televised state briefing on Monday. It signifies that the shown confidence and enthusiasm from the Executive Director assures the studies done on the herbal medications have the potential to offer preventive effects against the possible worsening COVID-19 conditions that patients endure.

(But in general, we see that as long as there are no problems and we can achieve the target sample size in the studies, we hope to finish around June),” he continued.
